About us

A Portuguese welcome on the High Road

Palmeira is a café, bar and deli rolled into one — the sort of place where you can grab a coffee and a nata at the counter, sit down to a proper Portuguese plate, or pick up the wine and cheese for home on the way out.

Regulars come for the sandwiches and the Super Bock, and stay for the welcome. As one visitor put it, it’s “a little corner of Madeira” right here on High Road Leyton.

Questions people ask

What are your opening hours?

Monday to Friday 9:00–20:00, Saturday 10:00–20:00 and Sunday 10:00–17:00. The pill at the top of the page shows, live, whether we’re open right now.

Are you a café, a deli or a restaurant?

All three. It’s a café and pastelaria at the counter, a Portuguese deli for groceries and wine to take home, and a sit-down bar and restaurant — especially in the evenings. Come for a coffee and a nata, or settle in for a plate and a Super Bock.

Do you serve Portuguese food?

Yes — this is proper Portuguese cooking, from bifanas and chicken escalope to daily specials, plus pastéis de nata and Portuguese cakes from the pastelaria. Regulars call it a little corner of Madeira in Leyton.

Can I book a table?

Bookings are welcome for the restaurant, and handy in the evenings and at weekends. Give us a ring on 020 8539 9320 to reserve or ask about a group.

Do you sell Portuguese groceries and wine?

We do — the deli carries cured meats, Portuguese cheeses, bacalhau, tinned fish, coffee, biscuits and a good range of Portuguese wine and Super Bock. Pop in and take a little of Portugal home.

Where exactly are you, and how do I get there?

We’re at 232–234 High Road, Leyton, London E10 5PS — a couple of minutes from Leyton Underground on the Central line and a short walk from Leyton Orient’s ground. Directions and a map are just above.
